This is the 25th year of the Newent Onion Fayre and the 15,000 or so visitors will find three stages of live music, street entertainers, dancing, fairground rides, exhibitions, lakeside events including the Funion Zone for children’s activities and over 150 stands with arts,
crafts and plants.
A Food Village, that offers international cuisine from the likes Mexico, the Caribbean, America and Spain as well as local breads, cakes and ice cream, will be set up in the Co-op car park.
Amidst the fun, there is some serious competition amongst the onion growers. Affiliated to the National Vegetable Society (NVS), Newent Onion Fayre’s Allium Championships, which takes place in the Memorial Hall, now includes leeks, chives, garlic and shallots.
Entries are coming in for the world famous onion eating competition.
Each round of 10 people competes to eat a 7oz onion as fast as possible.
