When the weather outside is frightful, does a dip in the sea sound delightful?
It has become somewhat of a tradition in our beautiful little seaside town to enjoy a rather refreshing dip in the North Sea on Boxing Day morning. After all, what better way to cure your late festive blues than participating in the fun and friendly charity event in aid of a charity close to your heart and Whitby Lions which support many local community charities and good causes?
This fun and frantic event has now been running over the last 45 years, seeing numbers soar from a handful of brave local citizens to over 150 eager individuals travelling from far and wide, desperate to run into the wintry ice-cold waves of the North Sea. Although as you’d expect, you are more likely to see the big numbers witnessing the excitement from the side-lines. The Boxing Day has become a traditional family friendly event with many families meeting up after Christmas Day to spending a lovely Boxing Day morning together.
The intention is of course that the Boxing Day Dippers get sponsored, with 80% of funds raised donated to the charity of their choice and the remaining 20% helping many local charities which are supported by Whitby District Lions each year. It is also a great opportunity to raise money for a special charity to say thank you for all their efforts and support during the year. 2017 saw over nearly £10,000.00 raised, with this year hoping to raise even more funds for local causes.

If you don’t fancy raising sponsorship money, you can always register on the day at our registration tent which costs £20 per person.
Registration & Location Details
All dippers must be registered on the day to take part. Our insurance does not cover anyone who is not registered. Our registration tent will be located at the Bandstand on Pier Road, opposite the RNLI Museum, YO21 3PU.
At registration dippers you should bring along their completed yellow sponsor form, give your name, Registration Number and the amount of sponsorship money you have raised.
10 AM – Registration opens and closes at 10:30 AM.
10:30 AM – Fancy Dress judging takes place.
10:35 AM – Approximately Dippers will enter the North Sea!!!
Information for Dippers
After registering there are male and female changing facilities available and after the dip there is a hot drink and soup available for each dipper. We would recommend you bring a towel, some spare clothes to get changed into after the dip and an old pair of shoes to do the dip in.
Fancy Dress Judging
Lots of dippers choose to dress in fancy dress, over the years we have had Santa’s, Batman and Robin, The Hulk, Superman, Christmas Trees and even a team of traffic cones! There will be a presentation of prizes which include shopping vouchers and Christmas themed swim ware prizes courtesy of Funky Trunks and Funkita for the following categories!
