The main attraction will be a colourful parade featuring 28 carnival groups from Hackney and as far afield as Bolivia. This year’s parade entries have been inspired by the theme ‘iconic Hackney’.
The procession is due to start from Queensbridge Road at 1.30pm and takes about four hours to travel around the borough (See route map below). As well as spectacular costumes and dancing at the council-run event, there will be seven sound systems, and live music from around the world as part of an all-day carnival extravaganza.
The exciting programme of entertainment starts at 12noon and runs until 8pm, involving different parts of the borough in the family-friendly, party atmosphere. There will be a live music stage in Gillett Square, Dalston, headlined by legendary Jamaican reggae star Earl 16. Carnival fun in Ridley Road, Dalston, is set to feature food stalls and seven sound systems, including two new ones: Eldica Records, in Dalston; and Faggamuffin Bloc Party in Hackney Central.
Children and families can enjoy a free play area in Gillett Square, from 12noon to 6pm, featuring a pop-up playground. While in Town Hall Square, the Hackney Playbus will be parked alongside a play road for youngsters on bikes.
