A historic May Day Celebration
Date: 01 May 21 — 01 May 21 | Report this event.
Entrance Price free Per person
Retford-based Rattlejag Morris team will be continuing a 26 year-old annual custom celebrating May Day Sunrise at historic Laxton, Notts. Around c. 5.20am on Tuesday 1st May the dancers and musicians – and stalwart audience – will gather on the top of Laxton castle “motte and bailey” mound (OS Map Grid Reference: SK72046746) overlooking glorious countryside close to the last Anglo-Saxon open field system. After traditional singing and dancing in the sunrise, beer, tea and bacon butties will be available (for a small donation). This old custom is a unique experience that will also offer you a chance to join in the revels. Members of the side claim that the sun has shown itself almost every year!
The historic castle site is usually closed to the public, but for this occasion access is allowed with permission from the local farmer. If you are thinking of coming along, do wear sturdy clothing and be thoughtful of the villagers still asleep when arriving and departing.
